• 11.12.15 Guidelines for Accessible Information in Learning available in 23 languages The Guidelines for Implementing Information Accessibility in Learning (ICT4IAL) are now available in 23 languages providing practical solutions for the preparation and sharing of accessible information for persons with disabilities and their teachers for learning and training purposes. The set of recommendations provide practical information on how to prepare the accessible text, image, audio, video, and media files.

• 10.12.15 Building on WSIS+10: The Knowledge Societies at the heart of the 2030 Agenda On 15 December 2015, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, UNESCO will organize a World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS+10) Review event, at which future action in the implementation and facilitation of its six WSIS Action Lines, towards 2030, will be discussed by several major stakeholders.

• 10.12.15 Director-General condemns murder of blogger Ítalo Eduardo Diniz Barros in Brazil The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today condemned the killing of Ítalo Eduardo Diniz Barros, a Brazilian blogger, who was shot dead on Friday 13 November in the Brazilian town of Governador Nunes Freire, in the northern state of Maranhão.

• 10.12.15 Learn, play mini-games and test your knowledge on freedom of expression! On the occasion of the Human Rights Day 2015, UNESCO Bangkok Office, in partnership with the Mobile Computing Lab of the Naresuan University in Thailand, launched the Freedom of Expression App, a new mobile game application on freedom of expression based on UNESCO's Freedom of Expression toolkit for students.

• 09.12.15 Philippines harnessing OER for the ICT Competency Framework for Teachers UNESCO working with the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), the Philippine Council for Higher Education (CHED) and the UNESCO Southeast Asian Centre for Lifelong learning and Sustainable Development (UNESCO Category 2 Centre - SEA CLLSD) carried out a two-day consultation meeting in Manilla, Philippines, from 28 to 29 October 2015. This national consultation focused on the development of OER-based Teacher Training Materials to support the ICT Competency Framework for Teachers (ICT CFT).

• 08.12.15 Director-General condemns killing of cameraman Guido Armando Giovanni Villatoro Ramos in Guatemala The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, has condemned the killing of Guido Armando Giovanni Villatoro Ramos, a television cameraman in the city of Chicacao, Guatemala.

• 07.12.15 High-level participants from over 50 countries ready to join in the dialogue on gender equality in media The twin events, International Development and Cooperation Meeting on Gender and Media, and the First General Assembly of the Global Alliance on Media and Gender (GAMAG) opened today in Geneva.

• 07.12.15 Taking the Qingdao Declaration forward: Seizing digital opportunities in East Africa to lead education transformation UNESCO held a three-day Colloquium on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Teacher Training in Eastern Africa from 25 to 27 November 2015 in Nairobi, Kenya. The Colloquium defined the principles of the Qingdao Declaration in Eastern Africa, taking into account the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on Education, and SDG 9 on Innovation. The event brought together 81 representatives from five countries: Kenya, Uganda, Seychelles, Mauritius and Tanzania, as well as IGOs, NGOs, foundations and the private sector in the region.

• 07.12.15 UNESCO's Director General recognized for leadership on right to information Two Finnish organizations honoured Irini Bokova in Helsinki on Friday 4 December at a function held in the newly-renovated Päivälehti Museum of Finland's Helsingen Sanomat newspaper. The citation certificate states that the recognition is granted "to mark the outstanding performance on international level in promotion of the principles of openness, cherished by Anders Chydenius, the initiator of the world's first Freedom of Information Act (1766)".

• 07.12.15 Director-General condemns murder of journalist Dorance Herrera in Colombia The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today condemned the killing of Dorance Herrera, a Colombian journalist in the municipality of Caucasia on 23 November.

• 07.12.15 Director-General condemns killing of reporter Hindiya Haji Mohamed in Mogadishu The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today condemned the killing of Somali journalist Hindiya Haji Mohamed, in the capital Mogadishu on 3 December.

Director-General welcomes COP21 agreement and underlines the momentum in changing minds not the climate

Paris, 12 December — The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today welcomed the historic agreement reached by participants at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.  "Beyond this ambitious and balanced agreement, COP21 has created a momentum in changing peoples' minds and preparing them to embrace the economic and life-style adjustments we all need to make to preserve human life on the planet," Ms Bokova said.

"Changing minds, not the climate" has been UNESCO's motto at COP21. The Organization's programmes and expertise were showcased in a wide range of side events during the Conference, highlighting the potential of the natural and social sciences, ocean research, education and culture to foster new approaches to development with a view to reaching the goals of the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, adopted by the General Assembly in September.

‎"The Paris Climate Change Conference has highlighted a new global awareness and unprecedented commitment to protecting the planet through solidarity and joint action," said Ms Bokova. "We must carry this spirit forward in implementing the 2030 Agenda. UNESCO's vision is clear: We need to change minds not the climate, using education, scientific cooperation, critical thinking and debate made possible through freedom of expression and information, which we promote worldwide. This is a single agenda for a better future for us all."

 

The Director-General however stressed that COP21 marked one step on the road to limiting the damage human activity has been causing to our environment and that UNESCO was looking forward to working with Member States to support concerted international action and laying the ground for more progress at next year's COP22, which will be hosted by the government of Morocco.

During the Conference of Parties, UNESCO's International Hydrological Programme (IHP) in cooperation with the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), highlighted ways to translate science into actionable policies and mobilize education to raise awareness and drive change.

Through exhibitions and numerous events, UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) raised awareness of the need to include the ocean in policies concerning the climate, as it is the planet's major supplier of oxygen, alongside forests, and a key regulator of the global climate system.

 

UNESCO's World Heritage Centre and the Man and Biosphere program organized a UNESCO sites day to highlight the important actions taken at World Heritage sites, Biosphere reserves and Global Geoparks to address climate change.

 

UNESCO also hosted a conference, which highlighted the perspective of indigenous leaders who are at the forefront of climate change as 400 million of them live in territories already affected by global warming and sharing their local and indigenous knowledge systems to counter the impact of climate change. It is UNESCO's conviction that indigenous people must be heard as they have already demonstrated that their traditional knowledge and resilience have invaluable lessons the rest of the world can learn from as it works on new approaches to foster sustainable development.

 

Throughout 2015, UNESCO has been working in close collaboration with the French authorities to prepare COP21. It hosted the Business Climate Summit in May and the International Scientific Conference "Our common Future under Climate Change", in July.

Inviting Entries of Student Projects for GYTI (Gandhian Young Technological Innovation Award) 2016

Dear Colleagues

Greetings from techpedia.sristi.orgat Society for Research and Initiatives for Sustainable Technologies and Institutions (SRISTI).

We are happy to invite submissions of projects/innovations by students for the Gandhian Young Technological Innovation Awards 2016. It is a SRISTI initiative to foster youth-driven innovations. The awards will be given during the Festival of Innovations, March 12-18, 2016 hosted by The Hon'ble President of India at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.

 Four categories of awards are: 

• MLM (More from Less for Many) or Frugal Innovation Award: Technologies that use significantly less material/energy compared to existing alternatives to create sustainable solutions.
• SRISTI Social Innovation Award: A demonstrable proof of concept/ prototype that possesses a significant amount of novelty and social application.
• Technological-edge Award: A breakthrough or a significant technological advance in any field of engineering, pharmacy, medical, agricultural, or other disciplines will entitle a student to qualify for this award.
• BIRAC-SRISTI award for biotechnological/medical/healthcare innovation: A technology having potential for reaching the masses and/or addressing a felt social need or making it extremely affordable compared to available solution will be selected. Up to ten of the selected innovations may be given a grant of Rs.15 lakh each and another hundred idea may be granted Rs. One lac each for taking the idea forward.

Any student project that has been completed in or after 2012 is eligible for submission. Students presently enrolled in a programme or those who have recently graduated from technical institutions/universities may submit their applications. The faculty members who in the past have supervised projects by students, who have graduated, are also eligible to apply on behalf of their students. The full project report of the shortlisted projects will be needed for final evaluation.

  

Last date for submission of entries is 31^st December 2015. The nominations have to be submitted at www.gyti.techpedia.in

We also request that you  may get abstracts of all the UG/PG projects along with the name of the students, their guide, department, college, contact information and key words, uploaded at techpedia.sristi.org. this will not only give visibility to the work done by your students, but also promote originality and collaboration. In due course, the linkage with grassroots innovators, MSME and other sectors may also be forged.
