As part of the build-up to commemorating the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists (IDEI) on 2 November 2016, a panel discussion took place on 23 September in Geneva, during the 33rd session of the Human Rights Council (HRC). The event provided an opportunity to address linkages between the safety of journalists and the Sustainable Development Goals in the context of SDG 16, Target 10 stipulating "to ensure public access to information and protecting fundamental freedoms".

The Council of Media Ethics of Macedonia (CMEM) has published a survey aimed to evaluate CMEM's role with regard to strengthening quality media and solidifying media self-regulation in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. CMEM's cooperation with the civil society and its impact on the media community was also assessed in the survey. Its results were presented during a press conference in Skopje on 28 June 2016. The survey was developed in the framework of the EU-UNESCO-funded Project "Building Trust in Media in South East Europe and Turkey".

A day-long programme at UNESCO Headquarters on 26 September will focus on the enormous potential of information to help meet the objectives the international community set for itself late last year when it adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. The event marks the first International Day for Universal Access to Information, which will be celebrated around the world two days later, on 28 September.

Africa's judiciary engages on journalism safety issuesClose to 100 participants came together in Arusha on Saturday for the seminar, "Strengthening judiciary systems and African Courts to protect the safety of journalists and end impunity", convened by UNESCO and the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights.

Next 28 of September, the first International Day for Universal Access to Information will take place. The Regional Bureau for Science of UNESCO for Latin America and the Caribbean, the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, the Supreme Court of Justice of Paraguay, the Public Ministry of Paraguay, the Ministry of Justice Paraguay, USAID, the Center for Environmental and Social Studies (CEAMSO), and the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights will co-organize the celebrations.

Namibia hosts a debut meeting to mark #AccessToInfoDayWindhoek, capital of Namibia, was the site last week for the world's first-ever commemoration of the new International Day for Universal Access to Information (UDUAI) which falls on 28 September. A vibrant meeting convened in the build up to the Day brought together people from government, the African Union and diplomats, as well as media and civil society organizations.
