Improving security and safety for media professionals in NigerA public conference to sensitize security officers in Niger on the protection of journalists in conflict zones took place on 5 October 2015 in the capital Niamey. The conference was organized by UNESCO together with the Supreme Council of the Communication (CSC) of Niger and with the support of the National Commission of Niger to UNESCO.

International dialogue on gender equality in the media to be held in GenevaFrom 7 to 10 December, UNESCO and the Global Alliance on Media and Gender (GAMAG) will hold the first International Development Cooperation Meeting on Gender and Media and the first General Assembly of the Global Alliance on Media and Gender (GAMAG), in Geneva, Switzerland.

Promoting freedom of information in the Mekong countriesMedical records held by public hospitals, detailed information on states' budgets, water quality reports or ecological impact assessments for infrastructure projects: in some parts of the world, access to this kind of public information is taken for granted. Citizens in some countries, however, face significant barriers in accessing such information despite the direct impact it can have on their livelihoods and ability to be civically engaged.

Media and Information Literacy (MIL) includes competencies to access, critically analyze, create, and use information and media in various forms. It is increasingly crucial to all citizens in changing media and information environments, whether we are looking at traditional or new media. These competencies, in the 21st century knowledge society, become even more important when we consider how they can stimulate effective participation in dialogue as well as the democratic and governance processes.

UNESCO will release a report on World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development, with a special focus on digital communication and safety at events in Paris, London and New York on the occasion of International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, celebrated on 2 November since 2014.

Rwanda community radio stations supported by SIDA/UNESCO projectUNESCO organised a two-day inception workshop in Kigali, Rwanda, from 14 to 15 October 2015 to lay the foundation for support to four local radio stations radio in the country. The workshop aimed at community radio practitioners contributed to reconfirm priority needs, mobilising local involvement and leadership while strategizing for the smooth running of the project. It will be implemented from 2015-2017 in Rwanda.

Within the framework of the 2015 Transform Africa Summit, UNESCO organized a workshop dedicated to the development of the YouthMobile Initiative project "Searching for Martha", on 21-22 October 2015.
