On 18-20 March 2015 UCSIA organizes an international academic workshop on Science Shaping the World of Tomorrow. Scientific Imagination and Development of Society at the University of Antwerp, Belgium.  

We understand imagination in relation to the scientific context as the art to creatively design, produce, discuss and  envisage societal alternatives for the future. In that sense it opens a window on the future and constitutes a source for societal development. Placed within a broader context, imagination processes play a role in the development of sciences and in the construction of societies, as well as in the interaction between sciences and societies, the former stimulating the further development of the latter, and the latter providing an environment in which the former thrives. Sciences and societies shape and further one another's imagination processes.

Call for papers

The study of the creative and  productive use of imagination at the intersection  of science and society in view of  building and shaping the future constitutes the  main purpose of this workshop. This reflection will be stimulated by focusing on four subthemes:

1. Imagination at work in the sciences

2. Sciences as  part of the imaginary of societies

3. Imaginaries of the future shaping contemporary reality

4. Politics of imagination

The workshop consists of a two-day international meeting with specialized lectures and presentations and debates by invited senior and junior scholars. It provides a forum of exchange of research from different disciplines such as philosophy, history, literature and the arts, sociology, economics, physics, science and technology  studies, political sciences, policy studies, …

Researchers, doctoral students and other experts are welcome to submit their application until 31 October 2014. Candidates should send in the completed application form, accompanied by an academic curriculum vitae and an outline of the proposed paper. The selection of participants will be communicated by the end of mid-December 2014 at the latest.

The selected participant will present her/his paper in a panel session (20 minutes in English) and will afterwards send in an article to be considered for publication (which will be submitted to careful selection). The aim of the organizer is to publish a selection of articles presented at the workshop. 

The organizer takes on charge all costs pertaining to participation and stay in Antwerp of all selected participants, while travel arrangements and costs are incumbent on participants themselves.

Although the 21st century began with a hope that information and communication technology will act as a boon for reinventing taxonomy, the advent and rise of electronic publications, especially predatory open-access journals, has resulted in an additional challenge (the others being gap, impediment and urgency) for taxonomy in the century of extinctions.
Predatory publishing has damaged the very foundations of scholarly and academic publishing, and has led to unethical behaviour from scientists and researchers. The 'journal publishing industry' in India is a classical example of 'predatory publishing', supported by researchers who are in a race to publish. The urge to publish 'quick and easy' can be attributed to two manifestations, i.e.'impactitis' and 'mihi itch'. While impactitis can be associated with the urge for greater impact factor (IF) and scientific merit, mihi itch (loosely) explains the behaviour of researchers, especially biologists publishing in predatory journals yearning to see their name/s associated with a new 'species name'. Most predatory journals do not have an IF, and authors publishing in such journals are only seeking an 'impact' (read without factor), and popularity by seeing their names appear in print media. This practice has most often led to the publication of substandard papers in many fields, including ichthyology.

Goal and Learning Objectives:
This training workshop plans to enhance the analytical capacity of young researchers in using analytical tools and techniques of SAM and CGE and their applications in Agricultural and Rural Development sectors. The specific objectives are to:
a) Provide basic knowledge and hands-on training to researchers on application of theory and tools of input-output model, Village SAM and CGE models.
b) Enhance capacity of researchers in South Asia to do better policy research and impact assessment using village SAM and CGE models
c) Hands-on training in construction of village SAM and CGE models.
d) Evaluate direct, indirect and economy wide impacts of agricultural R&D and policy interventions, including quantifying their distributional and multiplier impacts.

Bangladesh and India share the largest river networks in South Asia. These 54 trans-boundary rivers directly influence the lives and living of over half a billion people. Management of basin and regional level natural resource challenges is limited to practitioners in this region. Moreover, the curricula of universities, colleges and training institutes in Bangladesh and India, have a focus on national issues. Rather, attention is not given to trans-boundary water management concerns.

Against this backdrop, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, and Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, India, with support from IUCN's project Ecosystems for Life: A Bangladesh-India Initiative, launched a Dialogue in 2013 for young scholars and professionals, offering opportunities to work and interact with academics, experts and practitioners in both countries to encourage interest in issues related to water management.

The purpose of Water Futures II is to further develop better informed public discourse on these issues.

What are the reasons to participate in the Dialogue – the goals and objectives 

Overall objective of the Dialogue is to promote a deeper and nuanced understanding of riparian issues and common concerns. Specific objectives include:

• To build future leaders in water resource management in both countries;
• To equip young scholars and professionals with practical tools and skills for designing problem solving initiatives at local, national and regional levels;
• To provide opportunities to emerging practitioners to learn cross-country and cross-sectoral strategic, managerial and technical initiatives for sustainable water management, including  food and environmental security;
• Provide a platform for open discussions on common problems, prospects and challenges relating to sustainable water resource management.

Who can participate

The programme is designed for young professionals, environmentalists, scholars, activists, journalists, creative artists, researchers from water resources and environmental disciplines, young diplomats and young policy makers from Bangladesh and India. There will be 10 participants from each country, excluding observers who may attend the programme at their own cost. 

 

Minimum Requirements

• Graduation; 
• Two years practical experience in a related field will be given preference;
• Applicants below the age of 35 years will be given preference.

Course Duration and Location

Teaching Methodology

The course will be interactive, including films, music, games, lectures and discussions. Working days would be divided into four sessions, including lectures and discussions. Participants would also be involved in problem solving exercises in which the following activities would be covered: 

• Situation analysis and critique of existing joint water management initiatives, treaties, and water regimes;
• Design of a water resource management regime;
• Reviewing livelihood strategies.
• Participants from India and Bangladesh will be placed in smaller groups and prepare joint papers based on the modules of the programme.

Course Certificate  

Participants would be given course completion certificates jointly by the University of Dhaka, Jamia Millia Islamia and IUCN.

The Institute for Studies in Industrial Development (ISID) is organizing a six-day Workshop on the Audio-Visual Media as a Tool in Research during November 17–22, 2014. Print media is a format with which most researchers and scholars use extensively to bring out their findings and raise issues. In recent years, Audio-Visual Media (AVM), and the technology needed for its production, is becoming increasingly accessible, both in terms of ease of use, as well as cost. Digital media is being used by government departments, corporate houses, non-governmental organisations and others. However, social scientists and researchers in academic institutions have yet not fully realized the potential of integrating audio-visuals in their work.

The focus of the workshop is to familiarise the participants with AVM tools and motivate researchers and academics to use this medium as a tool, to not only enhance the content but also reach a wider audience and have greater impact of their research. Practical hands-on training in production of audio-video material will also be emphasised. Broad elements of the programme are: (i) understanding AVM – mass media in India and its use in various fields like health, social sector and the corporate sector; (ii) AVM as a tool in research – providing visual insight, supplementing other data, confirming or refuting findings, collecting video based data-subjectivity, authenticity and ethical issues; (iii) presentation and dissemination – effective communication of research findings, presentation skills and the new technology, integrating audio-visual data into PowerPoint presentations, the internet; (iv) AVM production techniques – understanding the technology, basic camera equipment, editing software, streaming video; and (v) hands-on production of AV output. Young researchers/teachers in academic institutions, colleges and university departments who are primarily from the social sciences discipline and whose work requires field surveys are eligible to apply. The batch will consists of 20 participants and selection will be based on relevance of research topic. A nominal fee would be charged from the participants @800/- for lecturer or equivalent; @400/- for scholars getting fellowship and @200/- for those without any fellowship or financial support. The selected scholars will be paid to and fro 2nd class railway fare from the place of study/work. For outstation participants there is provision for boarding and lodging in Delhi for the duration of the programme.

Motivation
Entrepreneurship has gained renewed attention of academicians as well as policy makers since early 1990s. The reason behind this interest is the role of entrepreneurship in innovation and value creation.  Various disciplines approach entrepreneurship from different perspectives to understand the insights of the journey that starts with idea generation and results in innovation driven economies.
The intersection of entrepreneurship and technology foresight promises to be one of the most popular fields of the 21st century.  There is a significant lack of knowledge and a need for interdisciplinary research on linking of technology foresight and entrepreneurship. The interaction of  entrepreneurship and technology foresight is inevitable and needs further attention.
Entrepreneurship and technology foresight are expected to initiate an increasing number of innovations in various economic sectors. Uncertainties in environmental, human health and safety effects associated with the increase of new technology introduced by entrepreneurial businesses raise concerns about their potential risks.
Entrepreneurship and technology foresight also raise more fundamental questions on the relationship between the entrepreneur and technology creation; and ethical, political and even religious dilemmas are put on the public agenda.
Understanding the dynamics of technology innovation and its subsequent exploitation in the value chain network (i.e., entrepreneurship) is in need of additional research.

Research questions
This special issue intends to improve the understanding of linking entrepreneurship and technology foresight. We are interested in contributions which look at the role of technology foresight in entrepreneurship.
Questions of interest include, but are not limited to:

• What is the impact of entrepreneurship and technology foresight on global economy and how it will grow in the following decades?
• Which factors affect the success of  entrepreneurship and technology foresight?
• How effective are the public policies supporting entrepreneurship and technology foresight in different countries?
• How can we model and measure risk and opportunity in entrepreneurship and technology foresight?
• What are some issues and challenges in creating successful business strategies for the implementation of  technology foresight and intrapreneurship in companies?
• How can we measure the effectiveness of R&D programs on technology foresight leading to intrapreneurship?
• Which criteria can be used for the evaluation of funding/investment decisions of entrepreneurship/intrapreneurship  and technology foresight projects?
• How can we measure value creation for customers by entrepreneurship/intrapreneurship and technology foresight?
• What kind of mechanisms and partnerships affect the emergence of successful entrepreneurship and technology foresight outcomes?
• How is power exercised during the process of starting a business and partnering research projects?
• How would the relatively modern trend of assigning patent rights to universities impact diffusion of technology foresight practices and entrepreneurship leading to industrial growth?

We would want to encourage the submission of empirical papers. Conceptual, theoretical, or modeling papers (with reference to the specific phenomena identified above) are also welcomed.

Frugal innovation is the ability to generate considerably more business and social value while significantly reducing the use of scarce resources. It's about solving the paradox of "doing more with less". It is a game-changing strategy for an "Age of Austerity" in which firms are being compelled by cost-conscious and eco-aware consumers, employees and governments to create offerings that are simultaneously affordable, sustainable and of high quality.
Even more than a strategy, frugal innovation is a whole new mindset – a flexible approach that perceives resource constraints not as a debilitating challenge but as a growth opportunity (Navi Radjou and Jaideep Prabhu, 2013).

The India China Institute at The New School, New York and Panjab University, Chandigarh, India, in collaboration with the Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi, University of Delhi and Jawaharlal Nehru University, invite abstract submissions for the Fourth Annual Interdisciplinary Symposium For Emerging Scholars on India China Studies. The symposium will be held on 19-20 December 2014 at Panjab University, Chandigarh, India. 

ELIGIBILITY

Researchers pursuing an advanced degree (MPhil/PhD) and young scholars who have been awarded their PhDs within the last five years are invited to send in their proposals. Advanced Master's degree students from professional fields such as law, design, and architecture are also welcome to apply. The call for papers is open only to Indian citizens based in India and abroad. 

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Interested candidates are invited to send an abstract not exceeding 1,000 words by 30 September 2014. The proposal should clearly state the paper's key research questions, its theoretical framework and the theme's overall relevance to the applicant's ongoing research work. Papers with a strong analytical focus on India-China interactions, comparisons, and impact will be given preference. The proposal should clearly mention the name, current affiliation, and contact information of the applicant. Only original unpublished papers will be given preference. 10 selected scholars will be notified through email by 15 October, 2014.

Abstract: Nanotechnology is one of the emerging technologies of the 21st century. It is an interdisciplinary science domain with potential applications in biotechnology, computer science, electronics, communication, medical and food, energy production and new materials. It has generated wide interest and its impact on society is expected to be huge. Innovative aspects of such new technology have important implications for the economic growth of the nations. It has received much global interest and many national governments are making large investments in nanotechnology research and development (R&D) activities. The present paper is an attempt to explore the nanotechnology R&D in the area of energy, water, health, food and agriculture sector in India. It also highlights the outcome of nanotechnology in the publications and patent numbers, institutional players in nanotechnology policy in India and the environmental, health and safety issues of this emerging technology. The information and data have been collected from publicly available sources and cited accordingly.

Its our pleasure to inform you that East West University in collaboration with SAARC Documentation Centre (SDC), New Delhi, India is going to organize 'Ten Days Course on Research Methodology' from 15th to 26th September 2014 at East West University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. This course is meant for researchers, Faculty members, M.Phil and PhD students.

How to apply
The applicants from India may apply through their parent organizations. The application should be forwarded by the head of the Organization. The application should be addressed to the Director, SAARC Documentation Centre, NISCAIR Building, 14 Satsang Vihar Marg, New Delhi – 110067. Last date to receive the nomination is 5th September 2014. Direct applications will not be accepted under any circumstances. The selected candidates will be notified by 11 September, 2014. The applicants of SAARC Member States other than India can contact their National Focal Points. Nominations will be accepted through the SAARC Secretariat.

Course Fee
SDC will bear the cost of training including the cost of course material, working lunch, tea, etc.

Local Hospitality
SDC will provide local hospitality for the participants, which includes free accommodation. SDC does not provide for medical insurance and sightseeing trips. However, transport for airport pickup and drop would be provided by the SDC.

Travel Expenses
To and fro travel expenses of the participants will have to be borne by the sponsoring institution or the individual concerned.

Call for applications - Fung Global Fellows Program 2015/16

Princeton University is pleased to announce the call for applications to the Fung Global Fellows Program at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS). Each year the program selects six scholars from around the world to be in residence at Princeton for an academic year and to engage in research and discussion around a common theme. Fellowships are awarded to scholars employed outside the United States who are expected to return to their positions, and who have demonstrated outstanding scholarly achievement and exhibit unusual intellectual promise but who are still early in their careers.

During the academic year 2015/16, the theme for the Fung Global Fellows Program will be "Ethnic Politics and Identities." Recent events around the world have highlighted the role of ethnic politics and identities in shaping domestic and international political arenas. The Fung Global Fellows Program seeks applications from scholars who explore the causes, narrative modalities, and consequences of the politicization of ethnic, racial, and national divides from a comparative perspective. Researchers working on any historical period of the modern age or region of the world and from any disciplinary background in the social sciences or humanities are encouraged to apply.

Applications are due on November 1, 2014. To be eligible, applicants must have received their Ph.D. (or equivalent) no earlier than September 1, 2005. Fellowships will be awarded on the strength of a candidate's proposed research project, the relationship of the project to the program's theme, the candidate's scholarly record, and the candidate's ability to contribute to the intellectual life of the program.
