UNESCO Green Citizens showcases grassroot projects at the service of biodiversity and sustainable development

UNESCO Media Advisory No.2020-55

UNESCO Green Citizens showcases grassroot projects at the service of biodiversity and sustainable development

Paris, 19 October — Today UNESCO will launch the Green Citizens initiative to amplify the voice of some 100 local citizen projects worldwide in key domains of biodiversity and sustainable development, including the Ocean, Water/Hydrology, Education for sustainable development, Indigenous and local knowledge.

UNESCO has witnessed a great increase in the number and pertinence of local citizen projects over decades of scientific research in biodiversity, oceanography and hydrology, and conservation work in its protected sites around the world (Biosphere Reserves, Geoparks, natural World Heritage sites).

The Organization wishes to highlight and support local, innovative, duplicable citizen projects with a verifiable impact on their community and stimulate the dissemination of new change driving ideas worldwide

The project reflects the conviction that changes in our relationship with living ecosystems will only be achieved by bringing together the complementary actions of the different actors at all levels and the reinforcement of networks of committed individuals and organizations. It is also a call on decision-makers to act quickly and a reminder that it is only together that we can make the change that is needed.

UNESCO Green Citizens is a collective endeavour bringing together the Klorane Botanical Foundation as a founding partner, Adveris digital agency, Passion Pictures Paris, Twitter (for Good), artists including Juan Delcan, Roxane Campoy, Desta HailĂ©, students and volunteers, as well as partners, dubbed Watchers such as Solar Impulse Foundation, Sparknews or ChangeNow that are critical in identifying outstanding local projects.

The Initiative enriches UNESCO's extensive and growing range of programmes and partnerships aiming to protect biodiversity.

[apeid.higher_education.bgk] Fiji ratifies the Tokyo Convention on recognition

Dear Colleagues,

Warm greetings from UNESCO Bangkok. We have good news below and hope you can share within your networks.

Congratulations to Fiji – and welcome to the Tokyo Convention Committee!

Fiji ratifies the Tokyo Convention on recognition
Bangkok, Thailand

On 27 August 2020, Fiji became the first Small Island Developing State to ratify the Asia-Pacific Regional Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications in Higher Education, known as the Tokyo Convention.

“This ratification will help propel Fiji further into the international sphere regarding higher education and the quality and accreditation across borders, and in fact, will be good for our institutions and also the overall well-being of the Fijian people,” said Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Attorney-General and Minister of Economy, Civil Service and Communications, Fiji.

The Tokyo Convention Committee and Asia-Pacific Network of National Information Centres (APNNIC) are the official networks of recognition authorities and NICs in the Asia-Pacific. Dr. Libing Wang, Secretary of the Committee at UNESCO, underlined the importance of this step for Fiji and the Asia-Pacific. “This achievement is a milestone for Fiji and the region as the first Small Island Developing State to ratify the Tokyo Convention. The ratification will not only facilitate recognition of domestic and international qualifications in the country, but also drive the quality standards to international levels and enhance mobility of students and professionals across the sub-region and beyond.”

Fiji becomes the ninth State to ratify the Tokyo Convention and join APNNIC with several others in the final stages of ratification procedures. In session at Fiji’s Parliament, Hon. Rosy Akbar, Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, emphasized the importance of the work to come: “I would also like to thank the work of the Fiji Higher Education Commission. I believe that we need international consistency in the recognition processes, which will enable transparent information of quality assurance processes for higher education.”

“This is a proud achievement for Fiji and a boon to those who qualify or wish to be qualified at our tertiary institutions – assuring as it does, prospects for portability of recognised qualifications and transnational mobility of their holders,” Mr. Julian Moti QC, Fiji's Higher Education Commission Chair, said. “In its designated role as national gatekeeper in the existing regional and trans-regional networks for recognition of tertiary qualifications, the Commission is poised to put Fiji in the world map of quality education. Our adherence to the Tokyo Convention requires us to lift our game to ensure that whoever qualifies from here is as good as the best that can be recruited from anywhere else.”

Open Data has contributed a lot to analyse and support urban processes. In many cities, it has led to the collaboration between different groups using data to develop new services and better monitoring of urban developments. For many urban issues, we need more than open data. New forms of public-private data partnerships are necessary to analyse complex issues such as climate change mitigation, energy management, and transport. This webinar will introduce an ongoing data-sharing programme on sustainable mobility in Hong Kong.

Name of the Speaker: Waltraut Ritter
Research Director, Knowledge Dialogues and University of Hong Kong

Waltraut Ritter is the founder of Knowledge Dialogues, specializing in research and advisory services relating to innovation, knowledge, and intellectual capital across the Asia‐Pacific region and Europe. She works on innovation projects at the intersection between universities, government, business and civil society. Milestone in UNESCO’s development of a global recommendation on Open Science

UNESCO Press Release No.2020-91

Milestone in UNESCO's development of a global recommendation on Open Science

Paris, 01 October—Following an extensive global consultation, UNESCO on 30 September submitted a draft recommendation on Open Science to its 193 Member States, a major step in facilitating international cooperation and universal access to scientific knowledge.

As of December 2019, UNESCO set up a partnership for Open Science bringing together science academies, universities, young researchers, libraries, and publishers, in line with the road map adopted during the Organization's 40th General Conference in November 2019. The Organization also mandated an Advisory Committee of 30 experts from all over the world to prepare a preliminary draft Recommendation on Open Science after a global consultation with experts, members of the public, nongovernmental organizations and agencies of the United Nations.

The draft recommendation reflects the wealth of perspectives, proposals and expectations that emerged from the consultations. In view of its vocation to become an international legal instrument, the draft takes into account the challenges facing the scientific community as a whole, as well as regional factors, notably in Africa. Overall, the draft notes the revolutionary potential of Open Science and highlights its importance in reducing the digital, technological, gender and knowledge divides that separate not only countries but people living in the same place. The successful and necessary transition to Open Science, outlined in the preliminary draft requires a change in scientific culture from competition to collaboration with due consideration for the ethical dimension of scientific processes.

"The draft recommendation marks an essential step in the development of an international consensus around Open Science and the promises it holds for science to become more inclusive, cooperative, and also more innovative," declared UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, adding that it could help "science unleash its full potential and take up the challenges facing our contemporary societies, such as global warming, the fight to end the shrinking of biodiversity and the struggle against pandemics."

The draft proposes a definition of Open Science, its objectives, a framework of shared values and principles, as well as an analysis of work that needs to be done before societies an benefit from the vast potential of Open Science, including indigenous knowledge systems. UNESCO's Member States are scheduled to adopt the final draft during their next General Conference in November 2021.
