UNESCO supports launch of Memory of the World GCC CommitteeTo support preservation of documentary heritage from the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and highlight the cultural treasures of the region, a Memory of the World GCC Committee was launched by delegations from the GCC with the support of UNESCO and renown international independent experts, following the organisation of a three-day workshop on "Strengthening the Memory of the World in the GCC" co-organized by and the Oman National Commission to UNESCO from 5-7 December 2016 in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.

The police sergeant Kaly Diakité is responsible for the communication cell of the General Directorate of the National Police of Mali. He holds a Master's Degree in Law and a Bachelor's Degree in journalism and communication. Before becoming a policeman, he was a journalist and radio host at Bamakan, the first free radio of the country. He is also cofounder of the newspaper Le Flambeau, a weekly magazine of general information. He was a participant and then an assistant trainer in the trainings organized by UNESCO, the OIF, and EUCAP Sahel-Mali, in Mali for security forces on freedom of expression and the safety of journalists in the framework of the Implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.

UNESCO triggered debates on social media and youth radicalization in the digital age"Protecting human rights online and offline and defending civil society and independent journalists are the solutions to solve radicalization in the long run, instead of censorship as a band-aid over the real illness," was the message delivered by Ms Rebecca MacKinnon at the workshop "Social Media and Youth Radicalization" convened by UNESCO at the 11th Internet Governance Forum, Guadalajara, Mexico, on 6 December 2016.

Community-led Climate Radio puts Young Voices on Air at COP22!Climate Radio operated during the 22nd Conference of Parties at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Marrakech (COP22), both as a press agency serving community radios around the world and as a local FM radio. Eighteen young journalists from the Middle East and Africa produced news content in Arabic, Amazigh, English and French.

Internet governance should include journalists' safety issuesA panel organized by UNESCO during IGF2016, in Guadalajara, Mexico, with the presence of two Freedom of Expression Special Rapporteurs, Mexican Government, journalists and civil society representatives has underlined the centrality of protecting journalists from both digital and physical threats.

Next December 7th, within the framework of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) "Enabling Inclusive and Sustainable Growth" (6th-9th December), the session "The Role of Judiciary Systems and Internet Governance" will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico. It is an invitation open to IGF participants and to those interested in joining through social media streaming.
