Global MIL Week 2016: MIL at the heart of learning and educationThe inspiring second day of the UNESCO-led Global MIL Week 2016 Feature Event in Sao Paulo, Brazil, brought to light on the relevance and urgency of policy on Media and Information Literacy (MIL) around the world. Media and Information Literacy and the Global MIL Week received high recognition from the government of Brazil, with the Secretaries of Ministry of Education, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Transparency, Oversight and Control and the State of Sao Paolo. These high-level officials together with representatives from UNESCO, the University of Sao Paulo and the Global Alliance for Partnerships om MIL expressing commitment in advancing MIL and called for MIL to be placed on the global development agenda.

Youth day at Global MIL Week: Critical thinking in focusWith over 150 participants present at the Kick Start of the Youth Day on Wednesday, November 2nd, the UNESCO's Global MIL Week 2016 celebration officially started in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Throughout two discussion panels young people spoke to youth and adults and engaged in a series of workshops on Media and Information Literacy (MIL). The first day of the Feature event of the Global MIL Week focused on critical thinking for youth and "hands-on" practical experiences.

No to impunity for Crimes Against Journalists in the Arab RegionOn the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the International day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly at its sixty-eighth session held in 2013, and celebrated on 2 November, UNESCO Office in Beirut, Maharat Foundation, and the Gulf Center for Human Rights organized an event entitled: "No to impunity for Crimes Against Journalists in the Arab Region" on Wednesday 2 November 2016, at the UNESCO Regional Office in Bir Hassan.

"No to Impunity" is the key message several international press freedom and media development groups and Yemeni journalists share on 2 November, the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.

ICTs transform access to information in Africa and young people's search for employment. Smartphones and Internet are now more and more accessible to the greater public and constantly expanding. The ICT sector plays a strategic role in the economic development of countries and is at the heart of interactions between industry, services, and local content. The sector has also directly and significantly contributed to the economic growth cycle and job creation in recent years. It is expected that ICTs will produce effects similar to those induced by major technological developments during the industrial revolution which began in the nineteenth century. In Burkina Faso, one of the least connected countries in Africa, young people, and particularly girls, continue to have difficulties in accessing information, and more precisely, access to job offers.

Young Girls and ICT: The Perfect Combination to Fight Poverty in Burkina FasoTo reduce the digital divide within the country, Burkina Faso has, over the years, supported actions to diffuse and use Information and Communications Technology in favor of women. Despite the favorable political context, more efforts are needed to address the continuing divide.

On 27 October 2016, together with the Permanent Mission of Greece to the United Nations, UNESCO organized an Interactive Panel discussion on "Safety of Journalists and Ending Impunity in Conflict Situations" at the UN Headquarters in New York on the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists (2 November).

Il rajoute "La promotion du développement durable nous concerne tous, chacune de nos actions a un effet immédiat sur le développement durable du Sénégal et du monde en général."

UNESCO supports African national broadcasters to develop gender equality action plansThe transition experienced by Africa, with the recent liberalization of the media space, has been marked by the expansion of audiovisual, written and online media organisations. This demand for freedom of expression and information has generated debates on a variety of issues which, until then, had been taboo or ignored. The concept of gender equality is one of them.
