[apeid.higher_education.bgk] Last call: Request for Use Cases of Micro-credentials in Asia-Pacific (15 July 2022)

Dear Colleagues,

Warm greetings from UNESCO Bangkok!

We are approaching a deadline to help UNESCO prepare a policy brief on micro-credentials in Asia and the Pacific. This effort builds on the Tokyo Convention Committee and global work published recently: Towards a common definition of micro-credentials. With support from the Japanese Funds-In-Trust (JFIT), we anticipate 8 individuals or small country teams from throughout the Asia-Pacific region will be selected and provided a modest contract (estimated 12-15 days of work each).

Could you please help us engage diverse experts and countries throughout Asia and the Pacific?

By 15 July, we hope to receive a brief proposal:

  • An up-to-date CV (e.g. for 1 or more individuals involved);
  • A brief technical proposal of 1-2 pages discussing the country selected in Asia-Pacific and approach/methodology to undertake the assignment (see the link below);
  • A financial proposal (e.g. estimated 12-15 days of work). No-cost proposals are also welcome if funds are not needed.

Submit via this link: https://careers.unesco.org/job/Bangkok-Consultancy-for-Use-Cases-of-Micro-credentials/749461902/

UNESCO is committed to achieving diversity in terms of gender, nationality and culture. Individuals from minority groups, indigenous groups and persons with disabilities, as well as nationals from non-and under-represented Member States are equally encouraged to apply.

Warm regards,

Wes Teter

View in your browser →

The Irish National Committee is delighted to invite you all to the 87th IFLA World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) taking place from 26 to 29 July 2022 in Dublin, Ireland.

The WLIC in Dublin enjoys local and national Government support, engagement from librarians across all sectors, plus great commitment and enthusiasm throughout the country. The event will facilitate the exchange of experience and best practice between local, regional and international members of the profession, thereby providing useful insights and global comparisons to advance library innovation at home. Furthermore, contacts made at WLIC will last a lifetime and greatly enhance personal professional development.

Ireland has a large number and wide variety of libraries to visit and, being a relatively small island, libraries outside Dublin are easily accessible as well. We will be organising a range of guided tours – covering public, academic and special libraries, large and small, new and old.

In addition, Ireland is an attractive destination for cultural tours and leisure activities more generally, for accompanying persons and for delegates wishing to extend their stay, either before or after the conference. This is the first time the WLIC has been held in Ireland. There is huge excitement locally and it promises to be a week-long celebration of libraries and librarians.

Most importantly, all delegates are assured of our warm Irish hospitality, Céad Míle Fáilte – a Hundred Thousand Welcomes! ☘️

Portrait of the keynote speaker, Helen Shenton

After working at Harvard University Library as Executive Director, Helen Shenton, joined Trinity College as the first-ever female Librarian and College Archivist. Prior to this, she held leadership roles in the Conservation Department of the Victoria and Albert Museum, and worked as Head of Collection Care for the British Library.

Her presentation is entitled "The intertwined digital and cultural heritage; a view from the Library of Trinity College Dublin" and will cover one of the most significant heritage projects currently underway in Ireland, the conservation and reimagination of the iconic Library of Trinity College Dublin and Book of Kells exhibition. Helen will also speak about the very ambitious Virtual Trinity Library, which will enable global access to some of the world's most valued, vulnerable and distinctly unique library collections.

These two major and deeply intertwined programmes will be presented through the lens of early 'lessons learnt' and in the context of some of the societal challenges for libraries, including engaging communities, capitalising on post-pandemic opportunities, sustainability, and re-evaluation of national cultural and digital heritage.

Ocean protection: "We have less than 10 years to reverse the trend", warns Audrey Azoulay

UNESCO Press release

Ocean protection: "We have less than 10 years to reverse the trend", warns Audrey Azoulay

Lisbon, 28 June 2022 - At the United Nations Ocean Conference, the Director-General of UNESCO called on the international community to redouble its efforts "to better understand and protect the oceans".

In Lisbon, Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of Portugal, and Uhuru Kenyatta, the President of Kenya, convened the Ocean Decade Alliance. Established within the framework of the UNESCO-led Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), this forum enables increased international cooperation in ocean research, education and protection.

"Thanks to this Alliance, we have already raised 920 million dollars, which is financing around a hundred initiatives," Audrey Azoulay announced at the opening of the meeting. "But most of the work remains to be done. The ocean is still too often in the blind spot of public awareness and public policies. We do not understand it and we do not protect it sufficiently. It is urgent that we reverse this trend," she said, addressing public leaders and private sector partners.

Better understanding will lead to better protection

UNESCO's Director-General said the first priority was to "advance our state of knowledge". Oceanographic research accounts for an average of only 2% of national research budgets, while only 21% of the seabed is mapped. Yet this data is essential for understanding currents, and identifying fishery resources and geological hazards. UNESCO is committed to international efforts in this field. It aims to map at least 80% of the seabed by 2030.

The second priority is to better protect the ocean. "This means rapidly increasing the surface area of marine environments benefiting from safeguarding measures," advocated Audrey Azoulay. Thanks to UNESCO's world heritage sites, 20% of the world's blue carbon reserves are already protected: coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass beds that help limit climate change by storing massive amounts of CO2.

UNESCO also has more than 210,000 km² of biosphere zones: a programme devised in the 1970s, which, at the time, was a pioneering step towards sustainable development, and aims to achieve equilibrium between man and his environment. In the same spirit, the Organization safeguards indigenous traditions and know-how that must be passed on to the younger generations, particularly in the area of sustainable fishing.

Education as the keystone

"But for these efforts to succeed and for us to achieve tangible results, we also need to bring the whole of society on board. This is the major role of education, the foundation of UNESCO's mandate," recalled Audrey Azoulay.

The Organization has set a target for its 193 Member States: that they should all include environmental education in school curricula by 2030. It is also developing global awareness campaigns, such as "Generation Ocean", for which the Brazilian surfer Maya Gabeira became the spokesperson on Monday when she was designated UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.
