Ocean protection: UNESCO expands its educational programmes

PRESS RELEASE

Ocean protection: UNESCO expands its educational

programmes

Paris, 10 June 2025 – On the occasion of the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), UNESCO calls on its Member States to make education a central lever for ocean protection. In Nice, UNESCO unveiled new initiatives, ranging from classrooms to video games, to raise young people's awareness of the need to safeguard marine ecosystems. The Organization also strengthened its partnerships to ensure funding of those initiatives.

"To protect the ocean, we must change our relationship with it, and this change begins with education. UNESCO is supporting its Member States to integrate the ocean and the environment into classrooms and the daily lives of young people," said Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO.

Putting the ocean at the heart of classrooms

UNESCO has made environmental education a priority, to integrate it into school curricula and in the daily life of schools. The Organization supports its Member States - such as South Africa, Portugal and South Korea - in developing educational content on the protection of the ocean. With UNESCO's support, Brazil this year became the first country to adopt a national curriculum, from primary to secondary level, dedicated to ocean literacy.

Presented in 2022 at the One Ocean Summit, UNESCO's educational reference framework for ocean education has enabled nearly 2,400 schools in 48 countries to join the global network of Blue Schools. It provides a framework for schools wishing to integrate the ocean into their teaching, through practical activities and field projects. In addition, UNESCO has trained nearly 350,000 young people and adults in ocean protection issues.

Video games and ocean sciences: a new tool for learning

UNESCO has unveiled Ocean Heroes, a new adventure in the Minecraft video game. Developed with Minecraft Education and Voice of the Ocean Foundation, over 35 million players will be able to explore coral reefs, seaweed forests and mangroves aboard a research vessel, while facing real threats such as pollution and invasive species.

Through entertaining missions, young players will acquire practical knowledge of ocean sciences, biodiversity and conservation techniques. The game offers concrete scientific challenges to solve, develops critical thinking skills and reinforces understanding of the impact of human activities on marine ecosystems.

Increased financial support for educational and scientific programs

UNESCO and the Prada Group have announced the renewal of their SEA BEYOND partnership, a global educational program dedicated to spreading knowledge about the ocean and its preservation. With the commitment of both Organizations, since 2019, this program has resulted in the training of more than 34,000 students in 56 countries, as well as the opening of an ocean education center in Venice.

Together, they announced the creation of a fund to finance projects led by young people on every continent, strengthening ocean education and culture within their communities. With an initial contribution of €2 million from the Prada Group, this UNESCO fund will be open to the participation of new partners in 2026.

UNESCO has also turned its scientific campaigns into educational tools: its pilot program on environmental DNA, which mapped 4,500 marine species in 21 World Heritage marine sites, involved scientists and local schools in sampling missions for three years. With the support of the Minderoo Foundation, this project will continue in 25 new marine areas protected by UNESCO.

Ocean: UNESCO urges investment in oceanographic research

nouveau_logo_UNESCO.png

PRESS RELEASE

Ocean: UNESCO urges investment in oceanographic research

Paris, 7 June 2025 – On the eve of the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), which will take place in Nice from 9 June, UNESCO is calling for an unprecedented surge in scientific engagement for the ocean, as well as unveiling new initiatives centred around seabed mapping and the creation of a global network for ocean observation.

"To this day, we know less about the ocean floor than we do about the surface of the Moon. Learning from the ocean is the greatest scientific adventure of our time. To succeed, the international community can no longer ignore scientists' warnings and must invest massively in oceanographic research – which currently represents less than 2% of national research budgets," said Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO.

While in Nice to represent UNESCO, the United Nations agency responsible for ocean science, Audrey Azoulay will call for stronger engagement from States to support global oceanographic research and the scientists who conduct it. The commitments made at this Conference will contribute to the objectives of the UN Decade of Ocean Science, led by UNESCO, which since 2021 has already launched more than 700 projects and raised $1.5 billion in funding.

Scaling up seabed mapping

Mapping the seabed and its biodiversity is the foundation upon which all marine knowledge depends. It is essential for understanding the effects of climate disruption, protecting ecosystems, forecasting disasters, and guiding the management of marine spaces. Led by UNESCO and the International Hydrographic Organization, with support from the Nippon Foundation, high-resolution seabed mapping now covers 26.1% of the world's ocean floor – up from less than 6% in 2017.

Despite this progress, around 25% more data remain in the hands of public or private actors. Making these datasets publicly available through UNESCO's open-access mapping platform would represent a major step forward for global oceanographic research. In Nice, several countries – including Canada, Germany, Monaco, Norway, and Portugal – as well as international and private-sector organizations, will announce new commitments alongside UNESCO to publicly share their data.

Creating the world's largest real-time ocean observation network

Understanding the ocean also requires continuous observation. To collect this data, UNESCO is equipping ships with scientific measuring instruments that transmit real-time data to the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), which is coordinated by the Organization. More than 2,000 vessels are already equipped – including those from the Vendée Globe sailing competition and commercial fleets.

In Nice, UNESCO will announce its target to involve 10,000 commercial vessels by 2035, calling upon its Member States and leaders among the shipping industry to join this unprecedented global ocean observation network. Ships will be equipped with meteorological and oceanographic instruments that transmit real-time data, helping to better assess the effects of climate disruption, anticipate extreme weather events, and improve maritime safety.

Harnessing citizen science to map marine species

Since 2021, UNESCO has developed a standardized environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling method to identify thousands of marine species rapidly and cost-effectively. Following a pilot phase across 21 UNESCO World Heritage marine sites – during which nearly 4,500 species were identified from 500 samples – the programme now aims to collect 2,500 samples across 25 marine sites designated by UNESCO, five times more than during the pilot phase.

These citizen science expeditions take place in iconic natural areas, listed as World Heritage or designated as Biosphere Reserves. They mobilize UNESCO experts, scientists, and volunteers – including students, teachers, and associated schools – to better understand and protect rare and fragile ecosystems.
