Introducing the Indian Science Reports

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to share that the Indian Science Reports Portal is now live (www.indianscience.net) and available for use. A brief description is as follows:

Release of Indian Science Reports- A comprehensive portal for S&T data analytics for India and 1000 Indian institutions

Indian Science Reports is a recently developed web portal providing a single integrated resource for analytical scientometric data about the research competencies of India at an overall level as well as for individual institutions. Released by the text analytics research team from the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, this portal is available at www.indianscience.net

The portal has been developed using bibliometric and altmetric information for India and also for the 1000 Indian institutions from the dimensions database (https://www.dimensions.ai/). It covers more than 10 aspects for measuring the research output of Indian S&T organisations. The differentiating characteristics of this portal versus other centralised information portals, namely, National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) (https://www.nirfindia.org/) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST) portal (https://www.indiascienceandtechnology.gov.in/) include its focus on analytics of S&T data for India as it is focused more on the output side of the S&T ecosystem. Users can also use a search-based mechanism to access the data for a given institution in form of institutional reports.

The web portal has been developed based on an analytical framework which can be utilised to understand national or regional S&T ecosystems using indicators such as research output, citations, scientific collaboration, funding, open access and social media visibility etc. The notable and unique features of the portal include,

  • analytics on open access visibility of public funded research output from India,
  • social media dissemination parameters of research,
  • analytics about gender distribution in Indian research publishing,
  • determine the core competency of an institution based on sustainable development goals (SDGs), etc.

The developed portal is useful for funding agencies, policymakers, scientometric researchers, researchers looking for potential collaborators, data enthusiasts and students among others. A research paper describing the major features of the portal was published in the journal Scientometrics (https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11192-022-04395-6), which can be referred to for more details. We invite you to visit and explore the portal (www.indianscience.net) and share your comments and valuable feedback. Further, it is requested to kindly share and disseminate this information in your academic and professional network.

Thanks and Regards,
