Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, will deliver a speech at the Summit on Friday 11 February, mid-morning. UNESCO experts will also take part in several round tables organized from Wednesday.

 

UNESCO is the United Nations agency in charge of the ocean. Founded in 1960, UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), which has 150 member states, coordinates global programmes such as ocean mapping, the tsunami warning system and many other scientific research programmes.

 

UNESCO, with its Member States, is also the guardian of unique ocean sites, with 232 marine biosphere reserves and 50 marine World Heritage sites of outstanding universal value.

 

It is also leading the United Nations Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development from 2021 to 2030, which this year includes several major international summits.
