Uganda government officials trained on web accessibility for persons with disabilitiesThe Government of Uganda has been increasing its efforts to computerize its operations and services with over twelve web based e-government systems already rolled out successfully between 2004 to 2015. However, the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) environment in Uganda is still not accessible to persons with various disabilities.

Strengthening the safety of Yemeni journalists in TaizIn a conflict zone, building up the safety skills and knowledge of journalists reporting from the frontline is essential to ensure free flow of information to the public. The situation in Yemen has called for urgent measures to protect the safety of media workers and it is as part of this effort that UNESCO recently partnered with the Studies & Economic Media Center (SEMC) and the Rory Peck Trust (RPT) to organize a five-day hostile environment training for 13 Yemeni journalists in Taiz, Yemen.

Media and humanitarians in crisis situations: Lessons learned from the Zika outbreakThe current Zika outbreaks, which began in 2015, have caused increasing alarm in countries across the world, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that "based on research, there is scientific consensus that Zika virus is a cause of microcephaly and Guillain-Barré Syndrom" intensifying even more its harmfulness and the need for preventive action. It continues to pose significant challenges in terms of populations' access to the accurate preventive information and life-saving behaviors.

UNESCO supports the development of pluralistic and independent media in Latin AmericaUNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information Frank La Rue attended an International Meeting of Parliamentarians held in Bogota, Colombia, this week. The meeting was co-organized by UNESCO's Office in Quito in cooperation with local, regional and international partners under the theme: "Building an enabling environment for the development of pluralistic and independent media in Latin America".

Media forums on rights, safety and security of journalists held in Kenya"Over the last three years, there has been increased cases of intimidation, attacks and threats to journalists in Kenya and this has mainly been exacerbated by powerful actors within government, security agencies and politicians in Kenya. These incidences have significantly undermined press freedom and access to information in Kenya," says William Oloo Janak, Chairman of the Kenya Correspondence Association (KCA).
