Science for Society: Policy perspective

NISTADS in collaboration with Indian Academy of Social Science is organizing a two day workshop on “Science for Society: Policy perspective” from 18-19 December 2008. This is being organized as part of 32nd “The Indian Social Science Congress” which is being organized by Indian Academy of Social Science. The workshop will deliberate on issues related to innovations at grass root level, farming techniques in hilly areas, intellectual property rights and technology dissemination.

Objective of the session: The objective of the session will be to deliberate on the issues facing India’s S & T and how S & T can contribute towards the upliftment of the weaker section of the society. Major themes which are proposed to be covered under the session are:
1. Innovations at grass root level
2. Farming techniques in hilly areas
3. Intellectual Property Rights
4. Technology dissemination

Session 1: Growth of Science and Technology- Issues involved. There are many issues facing the country’s S & T today. Shortage of quality manpower, infrastructure and dissemination of technologies are some of the examples. The session will involve presentations from researchers, science managers and academicians on their viewpoints regarding the issues facing the growth of S & T in the country, mainly consisting of case studies and their findings on different research studies undertaken.

Session 2: Science for Societal Development. How effectively the ongoing research in the country has contributed towards the upliftment of the weaker section of the society, is the key issue facing research community. The session will involve presentations from researchers, science managers and academicians on their viewpoints regarding how S & T has contributed towards the development of the society and how in future it can contribute further, the issues involved in technology dissemination and development. This may contain case studies on technology transfer and development.

Outcome of the session: The proceedings of the session will be published and the papers contributed by the authors will help in identifying the issues facing India’s S & T in present day scenario and possible solutions as suggested by the authors. The deliberations during the session will also throw light on such matters which are of relevance to India’s S & T.
